The first commercial launch of the Astra Space rocket turned out to be a failure - the satellites did not reach orbit

Image
The space launch of the rocket of the California startup Astra Space, held on Thursday, was unsuccessful. The launch vehicle could not bring the payload into the given orbit due to technical malfunctions. This was reported on the company's Twitter page     Image Source: Astra.com About three and a half minutes after launch, the first stage of the launch vehicle separated automatically. Despite turning on the second stage engine, it began an uncontrolled rotation. After a few seconds, communication with the stage was interrupted. We are deeply sorry to our customers @NASA and the small satellite teams. More information will be provided after we complete a data review. — Astra (@Astra) February 10, 2022 "We encountered problems during today's launch, as a result of which the payload was not put into orbit," Astra Space said in a statement. Launch Vehicle 0008, also known as Rocket 3.3, lifted off yesterday from SLC-46 at Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 23:00 Moscow time. I...

SpaceX lost about 40 Starlink satellites due to geomagnetic storm

Image
Moscow. February 9. INTERFAX.RU - The American private aerospace company SpaceX lost about 40 Starlink Internet satellites out of 49 launched into orbit on February 3, as a result of a geomagnetic storm, the company reported on its website. "Preliminary analysis showed that the increased resistance at low altitudes did not allow the satellites to leave safe mode and begin orbit correction, about 40 satellites will return or have already returned to the Earth's atmosphere," the company said in a statement. The company noted that due to the storm, air resistance has become 50% stronger than with previous launches. Experts decided to transfer the mini-satellites to a safe mode, in which they moved in orbit "sideways" to reduce resistance, but these measures did not help. According to the company, the devices that have deorbited do not pose a threat to other satellites and are designed to burn up upon entry into the Earth's atmosphere. The   launch of 49 Sta...

UAV "Sirius" will be able to work in reconnaissance and strike circuits with manned aviation

Image source: Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation Manned aviation acts mainly as a strike weapon against targets detected by Sirius, noted in the company "Kronstadt" MOSCOW, February 4. /TASS/. The latest Russian heavy unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) "Sirius" will be able to work as part of reconnaissance and strike circuits together with manned aviation. This was reported to TASS in the press service of the company "Kronstadt". "The ability to interact with manned aviation means joint work as part of reconnaissance and strike circuits, where the complex with uaVs acts as a reconnaissance and an operational strike weapon against ground and surface objects detected by it. Manned aviation acts mainly as a strike weapon against targets detected by Sirius," the ...

SpaceX put into orbit a new batch of Internet satellites Starlink, brought the constellation to 2089 devices

Image
Image Credit: spacex  Washington. February 3. INTERFAX – A falcon 9 heavy launch vehicle on Thursday successfully launched into orbit a batch of 49 mini-satellites designed to continue the deployment of the global Network of Internet coverage of the Starlink system, the developer of SpaceX said. "The withdrawal of 49 Starlink satellites has been confirmed," the report said. The launch was carried out at 13:13 on the east coast of the United States (at 21:13 Moscow time) from the launch complex 39A at the spaceport at Cape Canaveral in Florida. Liftoff! SpaceX's orbital constellation now consists of 2,089 spacecraft weighing 290 kg each. Currently, the company is the largest satellite operator in the world. About 15.5 minutes after the launch, 49 satellites separated from the second stage of the rocket in an elliptical transition orbit with an altitude of up to 340 km. After checking their performance by SpaceX engineers, the satellites using their own ion engines will ris...

Astronomers have photographed a black hole in the center of a spiral galaxy

Image
Employees of the European Southern Observatory  said  that they received images of the spiral galaxy NGC 7582, in the center of which is a supermassive black hole. The galaxy NGC 7582 is located 70 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Crane. In its core is a supermassive black hole.  The galactic core of NGC 7582 is supplied with energy by a black hole. In the process of this interaction, matter heats up and emits a huge amount of energy and powerful streams of particles into the surrounding space. The authors decided to find out what effect this process has on the entire galaxy. They looked at how the various ionized elements are distributed in it. In the image to the right, oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen are shown in blue, green, and red, respectively. The red ones are areas of high star formation activity, the dominant blue areas show the cone-shaped material that comes from the active galactic nucleus. The image on the left shows the same area. ...

Cyanide could play a key role in the emergence of life on Earth

Image
California chemists found that cyanide could act as a catalyst in the reactions of the synthesis of organic compounds from carbon dioxide on the early Earth. The study not only allows you to take a fresh look at the origin of life on our planet, but can also help in the search for life in other worlds. Perhaps this is what our planet looked like four billion years ago – a pale orange dot / ©NASA / Goddard Space Flight Center / Francis Reddy Yesterday,   a chemical compound known as cyanide (although it would be more correct to talk about a group of substances - cyanides containing the CN group) is associated by many with a very toxic colorless gas, a deadly poison and even chemical weapons. Indeed, many cyanides are toxic. Cyanides, as well as their derivatives, were used during the Second World War as a chemical warfare agent, and they still help in the fight against many pests: mice, rats, coyotes, opossums, ants. However, it seems that cyanide can not only bring death, but ...
