What is Mars?
Mars is a planet in the solar system. It is the 4th planet from the Sun, at a distance of about 228 million kilometers, and it is smaller than Earth, only about 6800 kilometers in diameter at the equator. The Martian day is only slightly longer than a day on Earth, but its orbital year is about 780 Earth days (2.1 Earth years). The planet appears red, because its surface is highly oxidized. The atmosphere there is mostly carbon dioxide (96%) and only about 8% as dense as Earth's. The gravity on the Martian surface is only a little more than a third of Earth's (.376 g)
