BlackSky 16 and 17 are part of sixty high-resolution Earth observation microsatellites in the BlackSky orbital constellation. This constellation will provide real-time observation of the Earth. The constellation is built by Blacksky, a subsidiary of SpaceFlight, and the satellites are manufactured by LeoStella LLC, a joint venture between Spaceflight Industries and Thales Alenia Space.

The second generation of satellites is equipped with improved solar panels and more advanced equipment for obtaining images.
